Stanford California

1st July 2010

I thought I’d update this regularly and here I am one day to go before I leave Stanford and I’m only posting now! shame on me! Well i do have a few excuses… we have had SUCH a wonderful time here with the most fabulous people I have been completely engrossed in the work and the conversations. I will take the time in the next few days to add here more about the inspirational classes I attended since I arrived here almost two weeks ago. I will also add in photos of Stanford which is such a calm yet grand place. You feel your educational level going up just walking around the campus!!  For now, I want you to imagine palm trees, red brick buildings which all have red roofs (there’s a story about the red roofs), sparkling fountains, squirrels (brown or black) scampering around the base of a multitude of tall elegant trees some of which are gum trees all interlaced with Californian tanned blond boys and girls on summer camp or fit and healthy grad students cycling from dorm to media club just stopping to help out wayward foreign students trying to find their classes yet again!

The lecturers are fiercely clever but some how approachable and everyone here on the 2 week social entrepreneurs course are all amazed at what we’re hearing and experiencing with them. None of us will be the same ever again. Stay tuned for the next episode.

Well, Easter is over and I managed to escape without chocolate overload! Now on with the task of planning our flights and itinerary for our visit to California then Lima.

There appear to be no direct flights to San Francisco without going through Sydney… it adds 2 or 3 hours to an already long flight.

Also trying to avoid coming back via Los Angeles as I’m told that’s a difficult airport to get around and through. And its the other side of the country so it would definately be good if we could avoid it.

Let’s see how we go now that the world is return to work after Easter. Flight Centre here we come.

I’m off to California in June to take up a scholarship with Stanford University for two weeks.

I will be joining a group of leaders from Non-Profit organisations around the world to study Social Entrepreneurship

Thanks to the Stanford Australia Alumni and The Dyson Bequest for this great opportunity.

After California, I’m off to Lima in Peru for a holiday… what a trip this is going to be!

It’s been over 20 years since I’ve been to California – in fact it must be that since I went to the US!

Really looking forward to spending time at Stanford University. AND I would very much like to meet the Governator while I’m there! I can’t say I’m a fan of Arnie’s politics but I have always been a fan of his determination to succeed. So I’d like to meet him.

They say there are 6 degrees of separation between us all so someone, somewhere should be able to introduce me to him… or at least sneak me into a cocktail party!
