Pearls Before Swine tells the story of Rachel Love, a female goldsmith with a growing business in 17th-century London, a city devastated by plague and fire.
The city is rebuilding and the landscape of London is changing. The monarchy is restored after the privations of Oliver Cromwell and his armies – Charles II is on the throne. The crown attracts courtiers seeking the King’s favour. A group of investors creates the Bond syndicate – led with some reluctance by Sir Thomas Bond – to continue the evolution of Mayfair from the remains of the once great Clarendon House and capitalise on the rising prosperity.
Rachel faces challenges as a single woman daring to run a business in a strongly patriarchal society. Threatened by grasping businessmen and the ire of the goldsmiths’ company, her life is under threat. She must learn to rely on new friends and old to hold on to everything she has built.
This is Pamela Sutton-Legaud’s first novel.
